ABSTRACT
Introduction: Due to the increase in violence in the country, pediatric hospitals have more and more admissions for gunshot wounds in various parts of the human body, among which is the spine. The spinal injury complete product of firearm wound in the spine is a rare situation, so we present the case of a female teenager.
Case report: A female of 12 years of age, who was injured by firearm indirectly at the thoracic level while playing
in the yard of her house, immediately losing sensitivity and movement of lower extremities, is admitted to the Children’s Hospital of Tamaulipas
where she confirms the presence of a firearm projectile at level T7. The patient is diagnosed with complete injury and paraplegia with no chance of
recovery.
Discussion: Thoracic spine injuries due to a firearm projectile are uncommon events in the pediatric population and generally present
with catastrophic outcomes at the neurological level if the spinal cord is affected. The multidisciplinary management could limit the complications
inherent in these injuries; however the quality of life is affected due to these sequels. It is necessary to establish new public security policies to regulate the use of firearms in the country.
