Perception of sexuality by elderly

ABSTRACT

Objective: To identify sexual behavior in adults over 65 years of age in Compostela, Nayarit.
Methods: Cross-sectional study. The universe was of 58 people participating in the Club of the Third Age. Test designed by experts from Havana Cuba, consisting of 8 items, to study the variables of sexual satisfaction and the frequency.
Results: Age group between 65 - 69 years was the most represented with 64%. Widowhood was the most common civil status. Older adults with sexual activity were 47%. The frequency of sexual activity was biweekly for 31%, followed by weekly for 12%. 53% of male seniors feel satisfied in their sexual relationships, and women feel dissatisfied by 24%. It is considered by the participants that sexual activity in this stage of life is 58%. Half of older adults are sexually inactive.
Conclusions: There is a need for elderly to have more information about sexuality at that stage of life.
