ABSTRACT
Introduction: There is controversy if in patients transfused with erythrocyte concentrates stored for a long time, the risk of morbidity and mortality increases. AABB 2016, recommend receiving selected erythrocyte concentrates units at any time within their validity period. Objective, to determine days of storage in transfused erythrocyte concentrates in patients after cardiovascular surgery and its relationship with complications in these patients.
Material and methods: Observational, descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study. The receipt of income / expenses of hemocomponents of the transfusion service, the FBS-19 formats for haemocomponent delivery and electronic file were consulted. July 2017 to February 2018.
Results: During the 8 months of the study, 437 erythrocyte concentrates were transfused in 202 post-surgery patients. The average erythrocyte concentrates storage at the time of transfusion was 15 days (SD ± 9). Of the patients who died, 4.45% (n = 9), the erythrocyte concentrates of greater storage was 35 days and the one of less than 3 days.
Conclusions: In the service evaluated, the average storage is below the standard emission (‹ 21 days). Prospective studies are needed on the effect of erythrocyte concentrates lesions caused by prolonged storage (≥ 35 days).
