ABSTRACT
The radiologist in the field of the breast has been acquiring new responsibilities, which include the early detection of breast cancer, the accurate diagnosis using imaging modalities such as mammography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging.
To this is added: percutaneous biopsy, assessment of local extension and response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, by magnetic resonance, and in the evolution of the patients treated. The interventionism has completed its participation in this field. With the diagnostic interventionism techniques such as: fine needle cytology, thick needle biopsy, vacuum assisted biopsy, percutaneous excisional biopsy and galactography. In addition to therapeutic intervention, which includes: removal with percutaneous biopsy devices, removal by thermal ablation techniques, radiotracer injection for sentinel lymph node localization and tumor labeling for primary chemotherapy.
Its contribution to early and accurate diagnosis, to the performance of more appropriate surgical interventions and the evolutionary follow-up of patients treated by different modalities; they make their participation almost essential in the general management of this disease.
