ABSTRACT
Suicide is a global health problem that causes a high morbidity and mortality rate in young individuals. Although it has been postulated that it is a phenomenon of social and cultural origin, in the last 40 years it has been linked with genetic, neurophysiological and biochemical factors. These include lipid concentrations in serum and brain tissue
In this review we analyze the evidence linking the lipid profile with suicidal behavior in both normal individuals and those with psychiatric disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia; finally we analyze theories which have been designed to explain why the concentration of lipid may be associated with suicidal ideation, suicide attempts and completed suicide.
