ELISA method for the determination of Helicobacter pylori in samples of serum and saliva

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Helicobacter pylori has recently been associated with the etiology of acute gastritis, chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, gastric adenocarcinoma and gastric lymphoma; traditional detection methods are invasive; therefore, it is important to evaluate non-invasive techniques for detection on accessible substrates such as serum and saliva.
Methods: Serum and saliva samples were collected from a population of 65 individuals aged 18-31 years, 71% female; the samples were analyzed by the IBL International ELISA kit; results were compared for sensitivity and specificity determinations.
Results: The results of the first 22 samples of serum and saliva were positive for both biological matrices, giving us a statistically significant association. When evaluating the results of the last 43 samples of serum and saliva we found some variability, without statistical significance.
Conclusion: The IgG ELISA kit is a sensitive method; taking into account the advantages for obtaining the samples of saliva and serum, this method can be considered as an aid for the non-invasive detection of H. pylori.
