ABSTRACT
Background: the policy of inclusion of all and for the wellbeing of all, advocated by José Martí, has a broad manifestation in the Cuban socialist project and it´s a very important objective in the programs of the Revolution; however, several centuries of predominance of heterocentrism have generated homophobic attitudes among some people. Objective: to identify the levels of homophobia in the Medicine and Nursing students at Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences.
Methods: a descriptive investigation was developed, with a qualitative approach, from May to June 2018. Theoretical methods were applied: analytic-synthetic, inductive-deductive and historical-logical; empirical ones: survey in the form of questionnaire to students and mathematical methods for absolute and relative values.
Results: low levels of homophobia among the respondents predominated, the most homophobic ones were the masculine ones of the medical career and the least, the nurses; most of the parents have a university or senior High school level, and live in environments where homophobia is minimal, the students have shown little knowledge about the meaning of LGBTI acronyms, participate little in actions against homophobia and have little disposition to participate in them.
Conclusions: despite the fact that homophobic figures are considered low, an alert is imposed on the indices that express social distancing, that´s why it´s urgent the training of teachers for the treatment of the subject at the curricular level and the mobilization of students in actions where sexual diversity is recognized as a sign of respect for the full dignity of the human being.
