ABSTRACT
Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia occur in all stages of life, the most vulnerable
groups are children, adolescents and women in reproductive age, with great medical
and social impact; both disorders must be understood within the continuum of the
human being’s life, since a previous stage is fundamental to explain variations in later
ages. Different physiological and pathological conditions favor iron deficiency anemia;
in Mexico, undoubtedly the high intake of phytates in children is a risk factor. Clinical
manifestations depend of the severity of anemia, age, comorbidities, chronicity and
speed onset. Serum ferritin is the most specific test that reflects reserves of iron in the
body. Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia are not solved with pharmacological
treatment based on different components with iron, it is important to understand the
problems that afflict the particular age group and antecedents of that group. In Mexico
iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia continue to be a public health problem,
different strategies have been used to prevent them; however, in recent years interest has
decreased to such a degree that they no longer appear in the National Health and Nutrition
Surveys, which limits evaluation of effectiveness about interventions to attack it.
