ABSTRACT
Introduction: To determinate the relationship between the physical deficiencies and the quality of life of post-ischemic stroke patients.
Methods: A descriptive analytical study was carried out with 120 patients, survivors of an ischemic stroke. After 30 days of the disease, they were referred to Julio Díaz Surgical Clinical Hospital in Havana to receive rehabilitation from May to December 2015. The demographic variables used were age, sex and skin color. The Health Stroke Scale of the National Institute was used to assess neurological severity. To assess the quality of life of post stroke patients we used the quality of life scale for stroke (38). Statistical data analysis was performed with the STATISTICA 8.0 program.
Results: The patients, predominantly white skin women, had an average age of 62.9 years. Language (68.2 %), facial paresis (66.6 %) and sensory disorders (35.8 %) were the most frequent physical deficiencies. The majority of patients, who had involvement in the upper right (22.7 %) and lower limbs (21.6 %), had higher degree of motor impairment (3 and 4). The presence of visual field deficiencies (p= 0.02), the severity of facial paresis (p= 0.00), right limb motor deficit (p= 0.00), sensory disorder (p= 0,01) and language (p= 0.00) were statistically related to the quality of life scale.
Conclusions: Some physical deficiencies of patients with ischemic stroke were related to their quality of life. However, these may vary depending on the study group, due to the influence exerted by the clinical characteristics, causes or location of the stroke.
