ABSTRACT
Introduction: For patients suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD), the essential thing is to reduce the progression of kidney damage through personalized counseling, as an alternative for nursing professional intervention and in collaboration with other professionals. Objective: To evaluate the effect of personalized counseling by nurses and nutritionists to preserve renal function in patients with CKD who are treated in the outpatient clinic.
Methods: Quasi-experimental study with personalized counseling intervention, in a sample of 160 patients divided into two groups: CKD + diabetes mellitus (DM) and CKD without DM; in each group it was formed a group with intervention and one without intervention. The Nursing Assessment Guide was structured on the basis of Marjory Gordon’s 11 functional patterns. The analysis was descriptive, with Student’s t test, ANOVA, and Cohen’s d.
Results: 45.6% of patients (73) concluded the follow-up; female sex predominated in the groups. At the end of the study, systolic and diastolic blood pressure (8.3 mm Hg, and 0.5 mm Hg, respectively) decreased in patients with CKD + DM with intervention. Percentage of renal functioning was preserved in the groups with intervention: p = 0.045, and decreased in the groups without intervention: p = 0.151.
Conclusions: With the intervention of personalized counseling by nursing and nutrition staffs in outpatient services, the percentage of renal function was preserved in patients with CKD + DM during the study period.
