ABSTRACT
Introduction: Intestinal parasitosis studies in adult and elderly patients are scarce in Cuba. The Cuban population is one of the most aged in Latin America. Therefore, elderly patients are a group to whom great medical importance is awarded. Objective: Determine the frequency of intestinal parasitic disease among adult patients cared for at Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Surgical University Hospital (HHA) from November 2015 to April 2016.
Method: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted based on analysis of stool samples from patients aged over 18 years using the simple stool method and Ritchie's technique. The variables considered were sample source, type of parasite and demographic data of patients. Statistical analysis was conducted with the software Epi Info 6 version 6.04. Association between the variables was determined by the chi-squared test and Fisher's exact test with 95% confidence intervals (CI = 95%) and a significance level of p ≤ 0.05.
Results: Positivity was higher in samples from hospitalized patients. Blastocystis sp. was the most common protozoan, alongside Entamoeba sp., among patients aged over 60 years. Strongyloides stercoralis (Ss) was the most frequent helminth among patients with immune deficiency.
Conclusions: The frequency of pathogenic protozoa among patients aged over 60 years suggests the need to intensify prevention measures against these parasitoses in those age groups. Detection of Ss points to the importance of providing risk patients with sensitive techniques to fight this helminth.
