ABSTRACT
Acute Respiratory Syndrome (ARDS) is a form of
non cardiogenic pulmonary edema, due to alveolar
injury and it is diagnosed according to the Berlin
definition. It is associated with a mortality of 20-
40% approximately. The ARDS is characterized
by three sequential phases: the exudative, the
proliferative and the fibrotic phase. It presents a
wide differential diagnosis. Management is based
in support as protective mechanical ventilation,
prone position ventilation and the avoidance of
fluid overload. The use of steroids, statins, nitric
oxide and high-frequency oscillation ventilation
do not have a clear benefit. Nowadays, strategies
to prevent ARDS are on study.
