ABSTRACT
Diabetes mellitus has been known for centuries. However, at the end of the
millennium knowledge about its etiology, natural history and epidemiology is still
incomplete. Epidemiological studies about diabetes mellitus have had a great
impact on the international scientific community. This is the reason why the authors
aimed to identify the contribution of epidemiology to the development of research
about diabetes mellitus and to a better understanding of this worldwide health
problem, explaining the concepts supporting such a statement, its behavior in
different regions of the world, and the various methods used to estimate its
prevalence. A summary was made of the impact of epidemiology on diabetes
mellitus, reaching the conclusion that the epidemiological method has effectively
contributed to the study of this condition in the following areas: its natural history,
establishment of diagnostic criteria, classification, prevalence, treatment,
importance of metabolic control, importance of insulin resistance and awareness of
other risk factors, providing new prevention measures and valuable clinical practice
elements so as to improve the treatment and comprehensive care of diabetic
people.
