ABSTRACT
Introduction: Unintentional injuries (accidents) in adolescence are a worldwide health problem. In Cuba, accidents are the leading cause of mortality among adolescents. They also cause morbidity, human suffering, economic loss, and other serious consequences. Objective: Train specialists from different community sectors so they in turn train promoters in the field of unintentional injury prevention among adolescents in their areas of daily activity.
Methods: An intervention study was conducted based on 13 workshops held in all regions of the country and one national workshop on unintentional injury prevention among adolescents in the period 2008-2012. The training was completed by 331 participants from ministries, state agencies, and social and mass organizations. Participants answered questionnaires before and after the training. The questionnaires included variables related to the main features of unintentional injuries in adolescence and how to prevent them. Data analysis was based on estimation of measures of relative frequency (percentage), measures of central tendency (median) and measures of dispersion (interquartile range).
Results: Before the training, only 9.4% of the participants passed the questionnaire (doctors: 16.2%; nursing personnel: 3.1%; other professionals: 7.5%). After the training, pass rates rose to a significant 91.8% (doctors: 97.1%; nursing personnel: 92.7%; other professionals: 88.2%).
Conclusions: The training proved to be useful, since participants broadened their knowledge about unintentional injuries among adolescents and learned how to prevent them, which paved the way for their eventual training as promoters in their various areas of activity.
