ABSTRACT
Introduction: Infection associated to health care is nowadays an important public health problem for patients, the community and the State, and its outcome is expressed in a gradual increase in morbidity. This is the scientific foundation underlying the public health research herein presented, which was based on a retrospective longitudinal descriptive design.
Objective: Describe the behavior of infections related to health care at the surgical puerperium service of 10 de Octubre maternity hospital from January 2013 to December 2014.
Methods: A retrospective longitudinal descriptive study was conducted of a universe of 3 028 patients discharged from the surgical puerperium service of 10 de Octubre maternity hospital from January 2013 to December 2014, of whom a convenience sample was selected of 95 patients diagnosed with infection related to health care at 10 de Octubre maternity hospital.
Results: Nosocomial infection was detected in approximately 3 per every 100 patients requiring surgical intervention. A tendency was observed toward a slight increase in the number of infected puerperal women. Among the germs found were gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, and gram-negative bacteria Enterobacter sp., Escherichia coli, Proteus sp. and Pseudomonas spp.
Conclusions: The sample studied revealed a tendency toward a slight increase in the number of women affected by infection associated to health care and caused by Enterobacter sp. and Staphylococcus aureus, with high sensitivity to chloramphenicol and to aminoglycosides like gentamicin and amikacin.
