ABSTRACT
Introduction: Mortality due to tuberculosis is an indicator of the actions included
in the TB control program, and guides the taking of decisions by agencies
formulating public health policies. On the other hand, the great burden of this
condition is a reflection of the living conditions and the health status of people.
Objective: Describe the sociodemographic aspects of the tuberculosis control
program with reference to deaths due to the disease in the localities of Los
Mártires, Rafael Uribe and Ciudad Bolívar, in Bogotá C.D., from 2011 to 2013.
Methods: A quantitative retrospective descriptive study was conducted whose
sources of information were the databases of competent institutions.
Results: Based on the sociodemographic data about patients deceased due to
tuberculosis, there was a predominance of elderly people, men, low schooling, and
TB-HIV coinfection. Deaths were more common among people on subsidized
schemes. It was found that no follow-up had been performed of the bacilloscopies
of all the deceased, and that collaborative actions between TB and HIV programs
require consolidation.
Conclusions: According to the sociodemographic results obtained, it is necessary
to apply a differentiated, comprehensive preventive approach to the TB population.
Actions in the TB program should be strengthened, so as to prevent mortality due
to this condition. It is also indispensable to set up an information system
articulating program control and follow-up actions with the institutions that provide
health services, since inconsistencies were found between the data obtained from
the various sources analyzed.
