ABSTRACT
Brief cognitive tests (BCT) or screening tests are instruments that have been used to detect
people with dementia, among the most used at the international level are the Mini Mental
State Examination (MMSE), the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), the Seven Minute
Screen Test (7MS) and the Memory Impairment Screen (MIS). The objective of this review was
to analyze the usefulness of the BCT to detect dementia in mexican population, a search of
articles in databases and websites was carried out (PubMed, EBSCO and Google Scholar). The
MMSE is the most widely used instrument in Mexico to detect dementia compared to MoCA
and MIS; no relevant studies were found about 7MT. However, MoCA has been more useful for
detecting MCI and dementia compared to MMSE and MIS. Each instrument has limitations and
aspects to consider when they are administered to detect dementia such as age and schooling.
