Educational strategy for the improvement of nursing staff’s attitude towards the Surgical Safety Checklist

ABSTRACT
Introduction: The Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC) is an instrument that contributes to strengthen the security of the patient that undergoes a surgical event. Its efficiency depends largely on the interest and relevance that the healthcare team concedes to it, in other words, on the attitude towards it. An attitude is formally defined as the favorable or unfavorable readiness towards an object, person or situation of reality, and comes as the result of experience. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of an educational strategy on the attitude of the nursing specialists towards the SSC. Material and methods: A Likert-type measuring scale was built and validated with the propose of assessing the attitude towards the SSC and a quasi-experimental design was carried out through an educational intervention. Nursing staff assigned to the operating rooms of two public hospitals constituted the universe of the study. For convenience and through a stratified sampling, two groups of 12 and 6 nurses were formed respectively. Both participating in strategies of five sessions of 45 minutes each. Before and after, the measuring instrument was applied. Non-parametrical statistics test were utilized. Results: Eighteen nurses (12 surgical and 6 general) participated. All of them showed higher scores in their attitude towards the SSC after the intervention. The difference shown to be statistically significant. Conclusions: The education strategy turned out to be successful on improving the attitude of the participants towards the SSC.REFERENCES
