ABSTRACT
Introduction. In order to evaluate the efficacy of intradiscal platelet rich plasma application as a treatment for discogenic lumbar pain, a double-blind therapeutic clinical trial was conducted.
Methods. The patients were randomly assigned to two study groups. Group A was given intradiscal platelet rich plasma and B intradiscal ozone. Both procedures were performed under local anesthesia, under fluoroscopic control. To assess clinical improvement, the visual analogue scale and the Latinen test were taken into account. To identify the radiological improvement, it was determined if there had been an increase in the intervertebral disc height greater than 50% or if there was improvement in the classification of Pfirman. In addition, the adverse events that occurred in both groups were determined.
Results. The intradiscal platelet rich plasma group obtained a greater number of patients with clinical and radiological improvement, with statistical significance, and fewer adverse events (p <0.001).
Conclusions. Intradiscal platelet rich plasma administration was a more effective procedure than intradiscal ozone therapy to relieve discogenic lumbar pain.
