ABSTRACT
The rationality to abandon the confusing term "effect or response to placebo" is reviewed, from the recognition that it is
absurd to attribute physiological effects to a chemically inert substance. The data that support rationality to assume the
concept "response to meaning" is appraised, and an attempted is made to demonstrate the connection that this could
have with the patient centered medicine in the Michael Balint’s idea. Also, a perspective is drawn to prevent chronic
disease based on the concept of "basic failure" if the general / family doctor assumes the task of understanding the
meanings of the patient from a perspective that combines clinical objectivity and empathy.
