ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the level of therapeutic compliance and determining factors in polypharmacy
patients aged over 65.
Methods: observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study. Place: “El Progreso”
Medical Centre in Badajoz, Spain. Polypharmacy patients older than 65 years with a consumption of 5 or
more drugs, prescribed by electronic prescription. Data collection was performed since July 2016 until June
2017. From the 541 patients meeting the inclusion requirements, a random and representative sample of 90
patients was taken and calculated by a computer program called EPIDAT 3.1. This sample achieved a
confidence interval of 95% with a recovery rate of 10%. 27 patients (30%) were excluded from the selected
sample. Dependent variable:
Morisky-Green test. Independent variables: age, sex, level of education,
Gijon scale,
control of drugs consumption,
Barthel and
Pfeiffer tests and pharmacological information, obtained from the
digital medical record and personal interviews with the patients. It was carried out a descriptive analysis of --the variables. In order to compare the quantitative variables, we used the t of Student or the U of Mann
Whitney and for the qualitative ones, the χ
2 with the Yates´ correction or Fisher´s exact test.
Results:
77.8% shows good compliance to the treatment. The only independent variable showing a statistically
significant relation with the compliance of the treatment for the polypharmacy patients is the socio-familiar
status (p=0.019).
Conclusion: the patients living with their family increase the level of treatment
compliance.
