ABSTRACT
Introduction: mental illnesses are associated with an increased risk of infection by the human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and, conversely, some mental disorders occur as a direct result of human immunodeficiency virus infection. Objective: to identify the presence of psychopathology in people with human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and its relationship with some sociodemographic characteristics. Method: a cross-sectional descriptive study including 741 patients with the human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome assisted at the Central Hospital of Nampula, Mozambique, was conducted. The sociodemographic variables, the presence of psychological symptoms and the psychiatric diagnosis were studied. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. Results: the average age was 35.4 years old and female patients predominated, with employment, primary schooling, a stable partner and zero to two children. The majority (70.7%) had psychological symptoms, symptoms of depression prevailed. The most frequent diagnoses were adjustment disorders (18.7%), major depressive disorder (16.8%), psychosis (10.5%), personality disorders (5%) and dysthymic disorder (3, 6%). The age group between 15 and 24 years, female sex, unemployment, being in prison, not having a partner and having zero to two children were significantly associated with psychopathology (p <0.05). Conclusions: psychiatric morbidity is frequent in seropositive persons and is associated with some demographic characteristics that seem to become factors of psychosocial stress.REFERENCES
