ABSTRACT
Background: In infertile couples, alterations related to the male factor comprise
between 30 and 50% of cases, one of its main causes are infections in seminal pathways,
which may affect not only sperm function, but also spermatogenesis, thus, it is
very important its assessment in the study of the male factor of infertility.
Objective: To determine the existence of a possible effect on the seminal parameters
of a positive sperm culture.
Material and Method: A retrospective study performed in patients in whom
direct spermatobioscopy was performed with sperm culture from January 2010 to
April 2015.
Results: 589 patients were included. A total of 217 cultures (36.8%) had development
of some microorganism, 22 species were identified of which six comprised 89.9% of
the cases (
E. faecalis, E. coli, S. aureus, S. epidermidis, P. mirabilis and
S. sciuri).
Conclusion: Among the reported findings, no significant differences were found
regarding the decrease of seminal parameters due to positive sperm cultures; however,
there was a slight tendency to particularly affect concentration and motility.
