ABSTRACT
The Zika virus is an arbovirus belonging to the
Flaviviridae family, which has been known since 1947. Only since
2013 it had been reported in some studies in Asian and African countries. So still many unknown aspects regarding
their virulence and pathophysiology. Transmission routes are not clear, but has been described the vector-borne,
vertical and sexual transmission. In Colombia, up to epidemiological week four of 2016, 25 645 cases of Zika
had been reported, including 1 331 laboratory confirmed cases, with a higher number of cases reported in North
Santander. We show a historical review and the virology aspects, pathogenesis, epidemiology, clinical manifestations,
complications, prevention and management of the infection by Zika virus.
