ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT
Treatment of infectious endocarditis in immunocompromised patients is complex. The mortality associated with sepsis in post-splenectomized individuals is 50%, the most common pathogen being Streptococcus pneumoniae. The presentation of infection in these patients usually has a sudden onset and torpid evolution. Clinical suspicion of endocarditis leads to a diagnostic algorithm to choose the optimal study to prevent associated complications. We present a case of infectious endocarditis in a complex patient, with the diagnostic approach that led to a successful treatment. These included the initial clinical diagnosis, backed by positive blood cultures and echocardiographic evidence of valvular vegetations, as well as advanced imaging studies that demonstrated the associated complications, all of which led to the suitable treatment and favorable outcome of our patient.
