ABSTRACT
In developed countries, the mortality of HIV-AIDS has declined dramatically and the causes of death increasingly
resemble those of the general population. In Mexico, there is a decline, but the basic causes of death are unknown.
Material and Methods. A retrospective study was carried out, including cases of HIV infection and death, treated
at the General Hospital Tijuana from January to November 2013.
Results. 84 deaths were documented, 68% were males and the mean age was 38.7 ± 11 years, the mean time
of the HIV diagnosis was 5.5 days, 10% reported previous care at an AIDS clinic, and only 8% received antiretroviral
therapy. The leading causes of death were non-AIDS-associated infections (44%) such as pneumonia, meningitis and
tuberculosis, and AIDS complications (38%).
Discussion. The causes of death remain infectious complications and aids per se, due to late diagnosis and treatment,
of disease.
