ABSTRACT
Introduction: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a rare tumor of mesenchymal origin with a tendency
to local recurrence and a small risk of developing distant metastasis. It is infrequent in the urinary tract
and in children. They are treated most of the times with radical surgeries.
Objective: To present a case of
pediatric inflammatory myofibroblastic bladder tumor treated with conservative surgery.
Case presentation: 10-year-old girl that had presented hematuria during several months, with anemia.
Radiological and endoscopic studies indicate the presence of a bladder tumor. Complete transurethral
resection of the tumor is performed. Only the immunohistochemical studies of the surgical specimen
confirmed the diagnosis. During the first year of follow-up there is no evidence of recurrence or
metastasis.
Conclusions: Complete resection of the tumor reduces the risk of recurrence, without having
to perform radical surgeries. A literature review of the subject was conducted and it was found that the
inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a tumor that brings diagnostic and therapeutic controversies; even
to name it there are divergences in the literature which also makes it an enigmatic tumor.
