ABSTRACT
Introduction: Since the first report of a renal tumor was published more than 175 years ago, doctors and scientists have been interested in recognizing its different variants. Objective: To determine the epidemiological characteristics, diagnostic and therapeutic strategy, as well as the anatomopathological findings of patients with renal tumors. Methods: A retrospective, observational and descriptive study was conducted to a total of 372 patients with renal tumors from 2012 to 2016 at "Celia Sánchez" and "Carlos Manuel de Céspedes" Hospitals, Granma province. Results: The average age of the patients was 62.6 years old; 63.97 % were males. The 58.07 % presented at least one risk factor. The diagnosis was incidental in 80.91 % of the patients; 47.04 % of the tumors measured up to 40 mm; 12.63 % of the patients had metastases, while 90.86 % of the tumors were resected. 68.34% of the resected tumors underwent total nephrectomy. The most frequent histological tumor type was renal cell carcinoma (96.23 %), specifically the clear cells subtype (79.83 %). Conclusions: Renal tumors still have an incidental diagnosis in initial pathological stages having an eminently surgical therapeutic strategy at the expense of radical renal surgeries.REFERENCES
