ABSTRACT
Rationale: As an individual characteristic, the chronotype describes the capability of the human being to be active and alert during the first half of the day. Morning, evening and intermediate chronotypes have been described. Evening chronotyes have been related to reduced sleeping hours, low academic performance, inadequate food habits, excessive body fat, and increased metabolic risk. Objective: To assess the relationship between the chronotype of university students, on one hand; and body composition and resistance to insulin, on the other hand. Study design: Cross-sectional, analytical. Study serie: Sixty female students (Average age: 18.4 ± 1.2 years) from the Licenciature in Clinical Nutrition of the Faculty of Medicine from the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (Puebla, México). Material and method: Chronotype of the student was determined by means of the Horne-Östberg (2005) questionnaire. Total body fat (TBF) and total muscle mass (TMM) were estimated by means of electrical bioimpedance. HOMA-R index was calculated with fasting glucose and insulin values. Resultados: Chronotypes were distributed as follows: Morning: 3.3%; Intermediate: 43.3%; and Evening: 53.3%; respectively. Seventy percent of the students presented with an adequate weight for length. However, 50.0% of them showed augmented TBF. TMM size was 32.5 ± 4.4% of the student’s body weight. Insulin resistance was present in 35.0% of the students. Student´s chronotype was associated with TBF and insulin resistance (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Student’s chronotype might be associated with body composition and insulin resistance. La determinación del cronotipo del sujeto puede constituir un nuevo criterio para la prevención y la modificación de hábitos inadecuados de vida y alimentación.
