ABSTRACT
The history of Artificial nutrition in Cuba dates back to the 1970s when parenteral nutrition techniques were first introduced in the Neonatal Intensive Care Service of the “William Soler” Pediatric Hospital (Havana City). Use of breast´s milk as trophic stimulant for the intestinal rehabilitation of operated newborns was also assayed in this Service. Experiences accumulated in the nutritional support of critically ill newborns were immediately expanded to adults assisted at the intensive care units of several prominent hospitals of the country. It was soon understood the need to incorporate such techniques in the treatment of major surgical dramas such as diffuse peritonitis, bowel fistulas, tumor cytoreduction, trauma and sepsis. Artificial was also incorporated within the organ transplant activity in highly specialized medical centers of the city of Havana. As happened in other latitudes, Artificial nutrition was given a great boost in the 1990s in the occasion of the surgical medical care provided to two emblematic cases in the country´s recent history. Confluence of personalities, medical care teams, institutions and lines of research ultimately led to the foundation of the hospital nutritional support groups with exclusive dedication, on one and; and the appearance of the Cuban Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism as the entity committed with the advancement of the sciences of Clinical and hospital nutrition, nutritional support, Artificial nutrition, and metabolism in the National Health System, on the other.
