ABSTRACT
Introduction: Melioidosis is caused by
Burkholderia
pseudomallei. It mainly affects adults with risk factors.
The data are limited in the pediatric population.
Clinical case: 6-year-old male from La Carlota,
municipality of San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec, Oaxaca,
Mexico. He initiated with high fever and without
predominance of time and attacks to the general state.
In his study protocol, the Thoracic X-ray documents
interstitial infiltrates and parahiliaries, integrating
the diagnosis of atypical pneumonia acquired in the
community. It also presented nonspecific data of
meningeal involvement with lumbar puncture, without
conclusive data. At 6 days after admission, it was
isolated in cerebrospinal fluid culture
Burkholderia
pseudomallei. He was treated with: Meropenem and
trimethoprim with sulfamethoxazole, he died 18 days
after hospitalization.
Conclusion: Melioidosis is rare
in children and this systemic disease can be fatal. The
clinical and laboratory diagnosis is problematic, due
to the ignorance of the disease outside the endemic
areas.
