ABSTRACT
Central venous access ports are an implantable system which counts with two parts: the portal, and the radiopaque catheter. These devices grant a simple, safe and permanent access to the vascular system, to perform prolonged endovenous treatments and offer the possibility of multiple and frequent punctures in a long term. The decision to insert a central venous catheter must be made after considering risk and benefits of every patient. For the insertion, the internal jugular vein must be catheterized, after the reservoir is placed under the thoracic skin, then the catheter is tunneled, and inserted in the jugular vein. In this study, we describe the insertion of a central venous reservoir, in a male patient who was under chemotherapy and lacked of peripheral venous accesses. Therefore, he was submitted to our service of Interventional Radiology Department in CIMEQ hospital. The device was place with no immediate complications. This technique is not wide spread in the country, though it is a performable procedure by the interventional radiologist and benefits a great number of patients around the world.
