Prevalence of dental-maxillofacial anomalies and its risks factors, in adult cuban people patients

ABSTRACT
Introduction. Teeth Malocclusion is a dental-facial anomaly which may arise anytime in life. It is caused by disorders during maxilla growth or changes along teething normal development. The increasing longevity of Cuban people find it vital to determine the prevalence of dental-maxillofacial anomalies and its risks factors, in adult patients. Methods. Research was carried out following a description and observation method, of transversal cuts, in a group of adult population of Santa Fe neighborhood, Playa municipality in La Habana. The sample was calculated through double staged conglomeration sampling from all the family doctor´s offices of that area. Hence, the subset was composed of 489 people in total, 155 of which were men and 334 were women; average age from 49.0 ± 8.9 years. All descriptive measures were expressed in percentage and average terms, and quantitative measures were indicated in standard deviation terms. Results. Malocclusion was predominant on women 68,5% and it was a growing fact according to the age. Prevalence of dental-maxillofacial anomalies reached 94%. Malocclusion predictive factors, by multivariable methods, were: protractile tong, bilabial incompetence and periodontal disorders. Conclusions. Orthodontic treatment on Cuban adult patients will beneeded; due to significant growth of malocclusion according to age factor, related to different risk factors.
