ABSTRACT
The interest and the research evidence reported for the most
important intervention models of mindfulness, more specifically,
the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and
the Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), have facilitated
the development of conceptual frames of work and
possible mechanisms of action that explain how these types
of interventions produce the benefits and positive effects on
the mental and physical health of individuals. Our empirical
experience with cancer patients allows us to suggest three
mechanisms of action that play a central role as active ingredients
of the mindfulness interventions: (1) attentional control,
(2) mindful reappraisal, and (3) the relaxation response.
We were very encouraged to receive a good deal of insightful
reflexions and commentaries about our systematic review,
methodological considerations, and mechanisms of action
described on the target article offered from experts in the
field of mindfulness from Latin America and Spain. The main
purpose of this reply-article is to offer my reflexions and responses
to the commentaries offered by our colleagues, who
kindly participated in the dialogue about the revision of several
topics in the field of mindfulness. I concluded this reply-article
indicating that the development and advances achieved
in this field of inquiry are certainly acceptable. However, further
research and studies are needed to address and over-
come the limitations of previous research and to encourage
more methodologically rigorous clinical trials able to report
sound data to demonstrate the efficacy of mindfully based
interventions.
