ABSTRACT
Mindfulness -the practice of focusing and sustaining the attention
in the present moment without making judgmentsis
a clinical intervention of emotional self-regulation and
stress reduction based on empirical evidence. Interest for
this intervention model has dramatically grown in the past
two decades. This increased popularity has been stimulated
by the advancement of neurocognitive science. Mindfulness
has been largely conceptualized in terms of self-regulation
with research studies reporting positive outcomes on mental
and physical health. The effectiveness on health outcomes of
the two most important models of intervention:
Mindfulness
Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and the
Mindfulness Based
Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), are actively being examined by
meta-analysis studies. Research results on these two forms
of mindfulness-based interventions for treating a wide range
of symptoms and mental conditions have shown moderate
effects. Despite of this burgeoned interest and promising research
results, interpretation of these outcomes have been
difficult and far from straightforward. The challenges encountered
in this field of inquiry are due to conceptual and methodological
limitations. An equally important topic that requires
attention is concerned with mechanisms of action that drive
MBSR and MBCT to positive outcomes. The current literature
presents several methodological flaws as they relate to control
design and comparison conditions. The main purpose of
this article is to critically review the conceptual framework of
mindfulness and self-regulation, and its mechanisms of action;
also to review the current scientific evidence and effectiveness
of MBSR and MBCT based on 18 meta-analisis studies
currently available in the scientific literature of mindfulness.
