Soft tissue balance in total knee arthroplasty

ABSTRACT

Joint surgeons believe that knee arthroplasty is a «soft tissue» procedure, for this reason it is imperative to know the anatomy in detail, in this way to obtain an overview of the structures that forbid us to properly align the limb. A properly aligned knee presents a remarkable postoperative evolution, with a clinical and functional response that satisfies the patient, as well as favoring its biomechanical properties and increasing implant survival. The management of arthritic knee deformities is due to contractures of the medial or lateral structures, therefore, the release of contracted tissue is the cornerstone of the surgical sequence. The aim of this paper is to present the main trans-surgical elements in the ligamentary balance in total knee arthroplasty.
