ABSTRACT
Objective. Present the case of a patient with surgical site infection after carotid endarterectomy and its treatment. Introduction. Carotid disease is a frequent cause of cerebrovascular events; endarterectomy significantly reduces the incidence of such events. There are several techniques for carotid artery repair, better results have been reported with the use of patches. However, the use of synthetic materials increases the incidence of infection at the surgical site.Case report. Male patient with multiple cardiovascular risk factors, who presents surgical site infection after carotid endarterectomy. He underwent surgical management and antibiotic therapy, presenting satisfactory evolution.
Conclusions. Dacron patch infection in endarterectomy is infrequent with an incidence of 0.25-0.5%; However, it represents high rates of morbidity and mortality, which is why it is important to study, prevent and treat it promptly.
