ABSTRACT
Introduction: High blood pressure is the first cause of morbidity due to noncommunicable diseases. Objective: To investigate hypertension in workers of a university and identify associated cardiovascular risk factors.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out. The universe consisted of 73 workers of a university, to whom data such as age, sex, present diseases, risk factors, degree of arterial hypertension and treatment were collected.
Results: More than half of the workers are women; the age group from 40 to 49 years prevailed. Two or more diseases predominated in the same patient. Pathological family history and physical inactivity were the main risk factors, followed by unhealthy diet. A significant number of pre-hypertensive cases were identified, followed by grade I hypertension. Half of hypertensive patients complied with just the isolated pharmacological treatment, without taking into account lifestyle modification. There were no significant differences in treatment dropout.
Conclusions: In the patients of the university studied, high blood pressure is a health problem that requires an individualized analysis according to the classification, the associated diseases and the present risk factors. It is necessary to maintain monitoring to determine the degree of hypertension and increase the perception of risk once the individual is hypertensive, to achieve better adherence to treatment.
