ABSTRACT
Introduction: The larynx is one of the most important organs of the respiratory tract and upper digestive tract. There are risk factors for the production of laryngeal cancer, which appears above 40 years and are common in men. Objective: To characterize patients with epidermoid carcinoma of the larynx from clinical and epidemiological point of view.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in all patients diagnosed with laryngeal cancer at Dr. Carlos J. Finlay Central Military Hospital, from January 2010 to January 2015. Clinical histories of patients with a histological diagnosis of epidermoid carcinoma of the larynx were reviewed. Age, sex, color of the skin, risk factors, personal or family history of oncological diseases, clinical manifestations and physical examination were taken into account.
Results: Patients older than 60 years prevailed. The presence of leukoplakia and laryngitis reached 15.82%. 60 % of them smoked and drank. Glottic condition predominated in 79.09 %.
Conclusions: Male sex had the highest incidence. Smoking and consumption of alcohol prevailed. The glottis location was predominant and the degree of differentiation was moderate and well differentiated.
