ABSTRACT
Introduction: tungiasis is a neglected tropical disease of the
skin caused by the female sand flea. The frequency in South
America is variable (21-83% in Brazil and 42% in Trinidad and
Tobago). The objective of this study is to describe the clinical,
dermoscopic and histopathological characteristics of patients
with tungiasis in Paraguay.
Methods: descriptive study of 13 cases of tungiasis from November
2017 to May 2018, in a population of extreme poverty
in Paraguay. Its sociodemographic, clinical and comorbidity aspects
were registered, as well as topography, classification of lesions
according Fortaleza scale, ex vivo dermoscopic description
and histopathological study.
Results: we included 13 cases, seven males (54%) and six females
(46%), with a median age of 10 years (7-65). The most
frequent topography was the feet affecting the periungual region
and the soles. The most frequent finding in the dermoscopy
and histopathology (100%) was the black area with a central
pore (85%), followed by visualization of the parasite (77%).
Conclusion: in this study we highlight the dermoscopic and
histopathological description of the eggs and the parasite.
