ABSTRACT
A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the lip in the Maxillofacial Surgery service of the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes University Provincial Hospital, Bayamo, Granma province, from 2010 to 2014. The objective of the study was to determine the possible causal association of the risk factors related to squamous cell carcinoma of the lip. The universe consisted of 46 patients who presented a clinical diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the lip. The percentage and the Chi square statistic, calculated through the professional statistical program SPSS 12.0 for Windows, were used. Of the 46 patients treated, 29 had a histological diagnosis of the carcinoma and 17 did not. The male sex was the most affected with 67.39%. The habit of smoking and white skin color were the risk factors that most affected the study population with 71.74% in close relation to sun exposure (63.04%). In patients with a histological diagnosis, the 58-53 age group with statistical association prevailed (p = 0.0262) and OR = 0.24. Toxic habits had a greater causal relationship with patients who developed the disease (89.66%), with statistical significance among them (p = 0.0004) and OR = 12.38. There was an association of morbidity due to squamous cell carcinoma of the lip with risk factors such as the color of the white skin, toxic habits, without evidence in relation to sun exposure.
