Emergencies because of dental caries in school children from 5 to 11 years old

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Dental caries is a multifactorial disease that appears with the teeth and when children are affected, it may cause slight discomfort, even spontaneous pains and it makes the patient goes to the dental emergency service.Objective: to describe the epidemiology of dental caries in primary school children assisted in the dental emergency service.
Methods: The clinical epidemiological method was used with an observational, descriptive, transversal study in school children from 5 to 11 years old and of different sexes, who went because of an emergency to the dentistry service located at Clodomira Acosta Primary School with the diagnosis of dental caries, they were interviewed and the oral examination was carried out with artificial light, helped by plane oral mirrors and the explorator ; the information was taken in a form elaborated for that. It was processed and showed in tabular way. X2 and Duncan tests were used.
Results: 57,7% of school children were affected by one or two caries, without differences between sexes. The 10-year-old age group and temporal molars resulted the most affected with an18.2% and a 46,1% respectively. The most frequent type of pain was the caused with a 79,3%.
Conclusions: Prevalence of dental caries was high, there were no significant differences in sex, and being the 10-year-old the most affected age group as well as the temporal molars the most affected dental group and the most frequent type of pain the caused one.
