Complications and negative effects associated to the use of piercings in maxillofacial site

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Recently the use of facial and oral piercings has notably increased all over the world, many times unknowing the capacity of occasioning different complications, most of the times, in the youngest population.Objective: to identify the min complications and negative effects associated to the use of piercings in maxillofacial site in Artemisa.
Method: A descriptive, transversal study was performed in 113 patients who needed assistance in the surgical maxillofacial service at “Ciro Redondo” General Teaching Hospital during 2006 and 2015 (10 years). For getting the information, observation was used as traditional method and an interview; for the analysis and interpretation of the results, the percentage analysis was carried out.
Results: The female sex was the most affected with a 58.5%, The most frequent site was the ear, and in the oral cavity, the tongue and the lips. The most frequent complications were scars, followed by infections, incrustation in the skin and gingival recession.
Conclusions: the use of piercings is a Health problem and it brings risks and complications. It is recommended not to encourage their use, by means of an adequate promotion task. But if they are used, a great care in the selection of the materials must be taken as well as to follow the rules of sterilization and disinfection at the moment of being situated.
