ABSTRACT
Introduction: indicators which characterize normal pattern of mature swallowing are unknown in Cuba. Objective: to determine the normal pattern of mature swallowing.
Methods: a prospective, longitudinal, quantitative and analytical study was carried out on the maturation pattern of the swallowing function in 31 children seen in the Faculty of Stomatology of Villa Clara, from March, 2014 to April, 2016. An observation guide was used to analyze the characteristics of the oral phase of swallowing. Descriptive and comparative analyses were performed and informed consent and medical ethics were respected.
Results: mature swallowing was observed in 26 children and immature swallowing in five. The evaluated aspects of swallowing matured in the following sequential order: sounds when swallowing, position of the tongue, escape of food, neck movement when swallowing, contraction of the masseters, contraction of the chin and contraction of the lips; all these elements are strongly associated with the maturation pattern of swallowing.
Conclusions: the normal pattern of mature swallowing was established between two years and four months, and three years and six months.
