ABSTRACT

This paper examines the work of Italian philosopher Gianni Vattimo, key figure of contemporary thought. Its main problematic is about nihilism, as it is explained in different phases of Vattimo´s theoretical production, where a dialogue with Friedrich Nietzsche and Martin Heidegger is pursued. The article analyses Vattimo´s philosophical proposal, “weak thought”, which implies certain notion of truth, understood as interpretation, as well as a philosophical approach towards our present technological world, in an accelerated communication society. There are also some interrogations about the articulation between “weak faith” and nihilism that Vattimo has explored in various works, as well as a brief discussion about his dialogue with Marxist thought, which is an implicit reference in his trajectory. In general, the article seeks to clarify what “nihilism” means in an important contemporary philosopher, as well as establishing some critical issues around his proposals.
