Economic cost of repetition in first year students of medicine and surgery at the University of San Carlos de Guatemala

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Repeating one year of study at the university is the action of attend repeatedly the same course. At superior educational level it affects both students also the institution. The prevalence of this phenomenon is frequent in the first years of medicine school, which generates an increment of the economic cost for the School of Medicine.The objective of this study is to estimate the economic cost of the university repetition in the students that attended the first year courses in the School of Medicine of the San Carlos University during the 2016 academic year and are repeating in the 2017 academic year.
Methods: Descriptive, cross sectional study realized in the Centro Universitario Metropolitano using data given by academic control, treasury and the eight didactic units of fist year.
Results: The fixed costs of the didactic units of fist year were given by the investment in teaching personal, administrative and laboratory which represented a total of GTQ 12,671,939.32 (USD 1,728,777.53), the variable costs were given by supplies used in paper, laboratory, cleaning and services which represented a total of GTQ 66,447.15 (USD 9,065.10). The cost per student for the 2016 year was GTQ 7,417.20 (USD 1,011.88). The repetition rate for the 2016 year was 0, 54 with a female predominant of 0, 32.
