ABSTRACT
The
TJP1 gene encodes for the ZO-1 protein, from the intercellular tight junctions
(TJP), which perform different functions according to their expression, such as in the
cell-cell contact, provides mechanical and structural support, regulates the transport
of nutrients through the cells. Its highest expression is in epithelial and endothelial
cells. It has been proposed that the alteration of the structure or disruption of the
TJP1 due to mutations or polymorphisms that lead to change in the structure of
ZO-1 or its expression, could be a pathogenic factor in different diseases, since it
modifies the architecture and tissue function, such as irritable bowel syndrome,
infections by hepatitis C virus, HIV, papilloma virus (HPV), and cardiomyopathies.
Considering that in humans the
TJP1 gene plays a crucial role in the physiology of
tissues; we carry out a brief review of the molecular bases and the implications of
the effect of the expression of TJP1 and related TJP genes, during the development
of different diseases.
