ABSTRACT
In old adults, aging generates a series of changes at the social, cognitive and motor level, as well as changes in oral tissues that present chronic-degenerative diseases such as diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2), which is associated with chronic periodontitis (PC), they are exacerbated. Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease caused by a specific bacteria to dental plaque, can lead to the loss of dental organs and modify eating habits and/or communication. A new concept in health science is the term of quality of life (QL), which is defined as the part of a person’s life that is affected by the state of oral health. Diverse studies support the relationship between DM2 and PC, therefore is relevant to investigate the relationship between oral health and quality of life.
Objective: To determine the quality of life in elderly patients DM2 with chronic periodontitis.
Materials and methods: Observational study, descriptive, cross-sectional in the Periodontics Clinic of the University of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Data was collected from 34 patients from January to May 2016, including patients older than 60 years with uncontrolled and controlled DM2, diagnosed with CP. For its study and analysis, OHIP-14 (Oral Health Impact Profile) was taken as an instrument.
Results: Thirty eight porcent of patients reported difficulty in mastication with an affect on functional limitation, 59% felt discomfort with their oral health status. In the correlation of the sociodemographic characteristics with the impact on the QL significantly resulted p = 0.07, the longer evolution time with DM2 with CP show high impact of OHIP-14.
Conclusions: The longer time in the evolution of DM2 and PC, the greater impact on oral QL in functional limitation, physical pain, psychological incapacity and psychological distress.
