ABSTRACT
Introduction: The upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a health problem of high frequency and one of the main causes of hospital admission. The acute form of presentation with important systemic repercussions puts on approval the skill and experience of the medical team that assists the patient. Objective: To characterize the behavior of the upper gastrointestinal bleeding in the older adult in the Surgical Clinical Hospital of Banes during the period of January 2013 to January 2017.
Materials and Methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in patients diagnosed with an upper gastrointestinal bleeding in the Service of Guard of the Surgical Clinical Hospital of Banes during the period of January 2013 to January 2017.
Results: The upper gastrointestinal bleeding in older adult prevailed in the 70-79 year-old ages, in the male sex (n=53) and in the white race (n=63). The etiology that predominated was the erosive gastritis in 21 cases. The bleeding of moderate intensity was the most significant in the moment of the diagnosis and 96 % of the patients solved with a medical treatment, with a survival of 93,3%.
Conclusions: The mortality in older adult for upper gastrointestinal bleeding was very low, fruit of the joint work between internists and surgeons.
