ABSTRACT
Introduction: morbidity and mortality are indicators for health care facilities of the Health System. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is responsible for the care of children up to the age of 18; it has a special distinction because it includes the most vulnerable population to multiple diseases with high risk of deaths. Objective: to characterize morbidity and mortality rates in children under one year old admitted to this intensive care unit at Pepe Portilla Pediatric Hospital from January 2011 to December 2014.
Method: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional research was carried out with children under one year old admitted to the intensive care unit at Pepe Portilla Pediatric Hospital during the period 2011 to 2014. The sample was comprised of 412 children. The clinical records and logbook were used as a source of information; data were processed manually and analyzed by frequency measures presented in tables and statistical charts.
Results: the groups most frequently admitted were those younger than 3 months; the most frequent morbidities were acute diarrheal diseases and pneumonias. The greatest number of cases came from the gastroenterology service. The most common underlying cause of death was bronchopneumonia. The mortality rate was 5.6%.
Conclusions: pediatric intensive care units are other connections in progressive care with a higher level of resolution, by reducing mortality rates, which is the main objective to be achieved in this service and it is through this that working strategies are established for the achievement of health care excellence starting in primary health care areas.
